Getting the Edge

The Blank Slate

June 17, 2015

With the summer training season upon us it is time to rally our goals and enthusiasm for the upcoming competitive season. It's always nice to begin with a clean sheet of ice and all of the amazing possibilities for growth it beholds.

My wife, Michelle Mills, and I just completed a recent seminar at the Sun Prairie Ice Arena outside of Madison, Wisconsin.  It was produced by Candi Diaz, a longtime friend and great coach, along with Larry Clemens, the fabulous General Manager of this beautiful state of the art two-sheet facility with a ballet studio in house.  SPICE Inc. offers an upstairs mezzanine flooded with light and space where we gave our video presentation and rap session to the skaters, coaches, & parents.

Taking advantage of the summer vacation, we were able to add that extra session dedicated to spins and step sequences focused on strategies to raise those GOE (Grade of Execution) marks.  During the summer skaters tend to get a little more sleep which helps them get additional energy and focus to work harder at perfecting that double axel or double flip.

It take 10 years to become proficient at any skill whether it be golf, gymnastics, ballet, piano, violin, or figure skating.  Utilize this blank slate time of the season to reach for your dreams and never let go of your aspirations!

I always say, "Work harder and smarter than your competition if you hope to raise your level of success for the coming season. Visualize your results and then focus on what you need to do to achieve your season’s goals."

The session is over and the Zamboni is coming out.
